Highlights: Â
·      On June 24th two major earthquakes occurred near Yumare, Venezuela:
o  A 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred first and was followed one minute later by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake.
o  Both earthquakes have triggered a U.S. Geological Service (USGS) red alert.
o  IMMAP reported the following potential exposures:
ü At least 590,000 people were in the severe to violent shaking area.
ü 4.8 million people were exposed to strong shaking.
ü Over 16 million people were within the earthquake footprint.
o  The USGS assesses that high casualties and damage are probable, and that the disaster is likely widespread.
o  There have been more than 20 aftershocks reported.
·      The impact across the county has been severe and widespread, but the hardest hit areas are the Capital District, La Guaira, Miranda, Carabobo, and Yaracuy:
o  Widespread disruptions have been reported to the electricity, water, and telecommunications systems across multiple states.
o  The domestic gas supply in the affected areas has been shut down as a preventive measure.
o  In Caracas (Capital District), at least four buildings have collapsed.
o  Metro and rail services in the Capital District has been suspended.Â
o  The MaiquetÃa International Airport in the La Guaira State has been severely damaged and is currently closed.
·      The immediate needs and priorities in the affected areas are:
o  Search and rescue of people trapped in collapsed structures.
o  Emergency medical care.
o  Structural assessments of buildings.
o  Restoration of essential services.
o  Temporary shelter for affected populations.
·      National Response:
o  A national state of emergency has been declared.
o  The national emergency operations center and civil protection system has been activated.
o  The public and private health systems have been activated for mass casualty response.
o  The national government is focused on the following activities:
ü Search and rescue operations
ü Emergency medical care.
ü Damage assessment.
·      The Venezuelan Red Cross Society has been coordinating with the government and have been supporting search and rescue efforts.
·      International Response:
o  The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) has maintained communication with the national government.
o  The activation of the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) is being considered for potential deployment.
o  The International Search and Rescue Advisory Group urban search and rescue teams are in the early stages of mobilization.
o  The U.S. Department of State has activated two Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Task Forces:
ü Virginia USAR Task Force 1 is mobilizing a 80-person/6 dog team.
o  California Task Force 2 is also mobilizing.
o  The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is activating its response mechanisms, including its Disaster Response Emergency Fund.
o  The European Union reports that Venezuela has requested the activation of the Civil Protection Mechanism:
ü Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic immediately offered to provide assistance and will be sending search and rescue teams.
o  The Copernicus Emergency Management System has been activated and been directed to monitor 13 Areas of Interest, including Caracas.
