Nepal Severe Flooding Situation Report #1

Highlights:
· At 900 hours (local time) a major flood struck the Bhote Koshi River:
o The Nepal National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) initially reported based on satellite imagery analysis from Planet Labs that the flooding was the result of a snow-rock landslide that took place on the Nepal-China border approximately 20 kilometers northeast of the Nepal-China Rasuwagadhi border crossing.
o Water levels reportedly rose dramatically, with flood waves estimated at 8-10 meters in some locations.
· The number of fatalities and people injured is currently unknown.
· The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) is reporting at least 30-40 people are reported missing.
· At least 10,000 households are in need of immediate humanitarian needs.
· There has been extensive damage reported in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts:
o The flooding has severely affected villages, markets, transportation infrastructure and hydropower projects in the Timure, Rasuwagadhi, and Syabrubesi areas.
o Residents living along riverbanks have been advised to move to safer locations and remain vigilant until further notice.
· Evacuation orders are in place along the Trishuli River corridor, covering parts of the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan as the floodwaters move downstream.
· The Nepal national government is leading the response, supported by the Nepali Army, and Police:
o The NRCS has activated Emergency Response Teams and is mobilizing additional volunteers and deploying resources to the affected areas. This includes the dispatching of 200 emergency shelter packages.
o An emergency hotline has been created to report missing persons.
o A website has been created for post-disaster rescue and relief by the Nepali government.
o The NDRRMA requests that citizens verify whether any information, photo/video is official or not before posting or sharing.
· The United Nations and its humanitarian partners under the leadership of the Resident Coordinator are coordinating relief efforts:
o Two staff members from the World Health Organization (WHO) are already on site with enough medical kits for 10,000 people for three months, as well as tents and logistics support.
o The World Food Programme and the UN Children’s Fund are preparing to deploy staff and trucks carrying relief supplies.
o Save the Children has started deploying staff to the Nuwakot District.
o The UN Development Programme is mobilizing data-management support and UN Volunteers.
o The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is monitoring the situation and standing by to provide resources.
