Mpox Situation Report #2




Highlights:  

·         There are two types of Mpox (clade I and clade II):

o   Clade I mpox is endemic in the DRC, but the current outbreak is more widespread than any previous DRC outbreak.

·         On August 14th, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), having concurred with the advice offered by the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee that Mpox constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.

·         The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued temporary recommendations to countries experiencing an upsurge of Mpox.  These recommendations address:

o   Emergency coordination

o   Collaborative surveillance and laboratory diagnostics

o   Safe and scalable clinical care

o   Risk communication

o   Vaccination

·         The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and Bavarian Nordic have partnered to deliver 10 million Mpox vaccine doses by 2025.  Up to two million doses will be delivered this year. 

·         On August 15th, Sweden confirmed the first clade I Mpox case outside of the African Region:

o   The infected person had travelled to an area of Africa experiencing an Mpox outbreak and is being treated for their symptoms.

o   Standard public health measures including isolation of the patient and contact tracing are being undertaken.

o   The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on August 16th recommends that member States issue travel advice for people visiting or returning from areas affected by the outbreak.

o   The ECDC predicts that the impact of Mpox on members states is low. 

·         The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of August 15th has reported that the risk to the public in the United States is very low.

·         The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is ramping up response efforts over the surge of Mpox cases across Africa.
