Marburg Virus Disease Outbreak Situation Report #3

Highlights:
• The Rwanda Ministry of Health on October 21st reported the following:
o There are 62 confirmed cases. Health workers from two health facilities in Kigali account for over 80% of these cases.
o One patient is in isolation and treatment.
o A total of 15 people has died.
o 46 patients have recovered.
o A total of 4,839 people has been tested.
o A total of 1,149 vaccine doses have been administered.
• The Sabin Vaccine Institute as of October 14th has delivered 1,000 additional emergency vaccine doses.
• The source of the outbreak is still under investigation.
• The World Health Organization (WHO) has supplied 12,000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which is sufficient to run a 50-bed treatment center for 30 days.
• A Joint WHO and Ministry of Health team have trained 520 health workers in infection prevention and control measures.
• On October 16th, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has implemented public health entry screening to identify and assist air travelers entering the U.S. who might have Marburg symptoms or might have come in contact with the virus.
