Democratic Republic of the Congo & Uganda Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Outbreak Situation Report #9

Global Highlights:  

·       The World Health Organization (WHO) on June 26th is reporting 1,330 cases (1,176 confirmed & 154 suspected):

o   A total of 307 deaths (306 confirmed & 1 suspected) have been reported.

o   153 people have recovered.

·       On June 23rd, the Ministries of Health for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda launched a cross-border collaboration to strengthen surveillance for border areas, and establish joint laboratories and clinical services in several locations across DRC, starting with Aru:

·       Vaccines and Therapeutics Update:

o   The Africa CDC and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations on June 24th began efforts to establish a Regional Access and Supply Consortium for Vaccine Manufacturing Input Materials:

ü  This initiative brought together key manufacturers, suppliers, and partners to develop a market-driven approach that enhances access to essential inputs, streamlines procurement, and strengthens Africa’s manufacturing resilience.

o   As of June 25th, WHO announced that they are working with the DRC and Uganda to begin clinical trials for therapeutics.

o   The U.S. Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) on June 26th announced that it is supporting the transfer of investigational doses of MBP134, a monoclonal antibody therapeutic candidate for compassionate use in the DRC and Uganda.

·       The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) as of June 22nd, has been scaling up the delivery of Safe and Dignified Burial kits, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other essential supplies:

o   By mid-July, the IFRC will deliver 181 Safe and Dignified Burial kits, 16,450 body bags, 550 PPE kits and 24 vehicles across the DRC and neighboring countries.

·       The Africa Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (Africa CDC) on June 18th was designated as the implementing entity for the Pandemic Fund.

 

Democratic Republic of the Congo Highlights:

·       The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) as of June 23rd, remains concerned of renewed fighting in the province of South Kivu:

o   No new Ebola cases have been reported there since May 26, however escalating clashes in the territories of Fizi and Mwenga have triggered new displacements.

o   UN partners are warning of growing needs for shelter, food, water, healthcare and protection.

o   The UN reiterates its call on all parties to protect civilians and ensure safe, sustained humanitarian access.

·       Humanitarian Assistance and Public Health Response Update:

o   The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Ituri Province has delivered 30 tons of medical supplies to Bunia.

o   The UN Migration Agency has deployed technical experts to Aru and Mahagi territories and trained frontline personnel in the towns of Bunia and Rwampara, as well as at key entry points in the capital Kinshasa, including N’djili International Airport.

o   The World Food Programme (WFP) as of June 26th is supporting more than 1.2 million people with food assistance:

ü  More than 36,000 hot meals have reached over 1,600 patients, caregivers and contacts across 14 treatment and isolation centers since May 28th.

ü  Take-home rations have supported more than 2,600 people in North Kivu and Ituri.

ü  Monthly food assistance is reaching 14,000 people in ten quarantined villages in South Kivu.

ü  WFP is currently supporting nutrition activities in seven affected health zones. However, gaps in nutrition screening, and weak triage systems, are limiting targeted interventions.

·       Food Security Update:

o   As of June 26th, 30 of the health zones affected are facing crisis levels of hunger or worse (IPC Phase 3+), including seven facing emergency levels of hunger (IPC Phase 4).

o   More than 10 million people across eastern DRC are food insecure.

·       Logistical Support:

o   The WFP-managed United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) has conducted 268 flights, transported more than 1,750 humanitarian responders and delivered 36 metric tons of critical cargo to frontline areas:

ü  UNHAS operates daily flights linking Kinshasa, Bunia, Beni and other priority outbreak locations.

o   WFP-chartered aircraft have moved nearly 154 metric tons of medical supplies, PPE, laboratory equipment and other life-saving cargo to Ebola-affected areas.

o   A dedicated helicopter facilitates access to Ebola hotspots such as Mongbwalu and Nyakunde.

o   A Hercules C-130 aircraft has transported vital cargo from Uganda to Bunia, with more than 150 mt of essential supplies moved to date.

o   Three Epishuttle isolation units have been prepositioned in Bunia, to evacuate confirmed cases safely, with MEDEVAC training coordinated alongside partners.

 

Uganda Highlights:

·       The Uganda Ministry of Health (MOH) reported on June 19th that routine health services continue to operate normally during this outbreak.  

·       The Uganda MOH on June 26th reported that a total of 831 total contacts have been identified:

o   A total of five contacts are under follow-up.

o   816 contacts have completed the 21-day follow-up schedule.

·       Travelers Screening:

o   A total of 5,465 travelers have been screened at various points of entry. This includes:

ü  2,105 inbound travelers.

ü  1,1714 outbound travelers.

o   The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) is supporting travelers screening:

ü  Volunteers at points of entry are conducting and supporting temperature checks and mandatory handwashing at key transit points.

ü  URCS volunteers are strategically stationed at bus parks and entry points, where they provide both practical support and health education to travelers.

·       On June 23rd, the URCS announced that the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has distributed $500,000 in emergency aid to the IFRC to support the Ebola response activities in Uganda.

 

France Highlights:

·       On June 24th, the EU Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported that a doctor returning to France from the DRC has tested positive for the virus.

·       The risk assessment for the EU remains very low as of June 26th.
