Venezuela Earthquakes Situation Report #6

Highlights:  

·       As of July 15th, more than 1,200 aftershocks have been reported.

·       A total of 4,829 people has died and 16,740 people have been injured.

·       The national government response remains focused on search and rescue operations, as well as assistance to affected people.

·       Search and Rescue Update:

o   A total of 71 search and rescue teams from 31 countries, comprising 2,786 personnel and 216 search dogs remain deployed.

o   A total of 6,462 people has been rescued.

·       The Venezuelan government is advancing a unified registration process for affected families in transitional camps through the collection of biometric and contact information to support assistance management, social support programs and housing solutions.

·       As of July 15th, the World Food Programme (WFP) has reached over 67,500 people in the affected areas:

o   Over 60,300 hot meals have been served.

o   39,000 Ready-to-Eat kits have been distributed.

o   More than 21,100 people have benefited from 50-kilogram food baskets.

·       Telecommunications Update:

o   The Venezuelan Red Cross Society (VRCS) on July 9th has established three free connectivity points in La Guaira.

o   The Logistics and Telecommunications Cluster and their partners has expanded emergency connectivity services at priority displacement sites, providing shared internet access and strengthening communications for affected communities and humanitarian responders.

·       On July 14th, the VRCS reported that they have established an alliance with the Clover Internacional:

o   This alliance will manage the reception, storage, mobilization, and distribution of supplies in La Guaira.

o   Clover is supporting VRCS by contributing their supply and transportation network to ensure the transfer of humanitarian assistance to the emergency zones.

o   VRCS volunteers are providing health care, water, sanitation, and psychosocial support to the affected communities.

·       Healthcare and Public Health Update:

o   The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) on July 14th reported the following:

ü  The health response has transitioned from rapid damage assessments to restoring the continuity of essential health services.

ü  Functional constraints persist across the affected health network, particularly in La Guaira, where reduced hospital capacity continues to limit specialized care and increase pressure on referral pathways.

ü  Damage has been identified in 38 health facilities across the three most affected states, while Mental Health and Psychosocial Support remains a priority need, particularly in La Guaira and temporary shelters.

ü  Thirteen EMTs are operational in La Guaira, Caracas and Miranda and Aragua and are focused on increasing clinical capacity in affected areas.

ü  PAHO has locally distributed an initial six tons of supplies, delivering Trauma and Emergency Surgery Kits to 4 high-complexity hospitals and medication and equipment modules to 5 community health areas and a specialized clinic.

o   VRCS reported on July 14th that the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) field hospital is operational:

ü  The triage station handles more than 120 cases a day with three doctors.

ü  The hospital itself has already treated thousands of patients.

·       Housing and Infrastructure Update:

o   At least 856 building have been affected and 190 buildings have collapsed.

o   17,907 people have lost their homes.

o   The Venezuelan government have identified 40 sites in La Guaira State for the development of housing projects intended for affected populations.

o   A total of 107 transitional camps have been established with a capacity of 25,152 people and a current occupancy of 20,936 people.

o   An initial assessment conducted by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction indicates that direct damage to housing and infrastructure amounts to approximately $37 billion:

ü  Most of the damage, estimated at around $24 billion, is concentrated in housing, businesses, schools, hospitals, and public facilities.

·       The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance’s (OCHA) goal is to assist 1.3 million over the next six months which will require $298 million in funding.

·       The European Union (EU) on July 15th announced that it will be providing 10 million Euros in new humanitarian funding.

·       As of July 15th, the EU has delivered nearly 80 tons of supplies via two humanitarian air bridge flights.

·       An initial reconstruction fund has been established by the national government which is equivalent to $200 million.
