Global Highlights:
· The World Health Organization (WHO) reported 2,136 cases (1,851 confirmed, 284 suspected & 1 probable) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda and France:
o 651 people have died (650 confirmed & 1 probable).
o A total of 318 people has recovered.
o As of July 9th, 112 health workers have been affected and 35 has died.
· The UN Office of the Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) has warned that severe funding shortfalls are limiting their ability to respond at scale.
· The UN Senior Ebola Coordinator and the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator on July 9th have called for a faster response to the outbreak.
· The UN Migration Agency (IOM) is scaling up its response, enabling enhanced surge support, operational capacity and coordination across affected countries.
· On July 3rd, an EU Humanitarian Air Bridge flight from Liège landed in Rwanda with more than 75 tons of medical supplies and other aid for the Ebola response.
Democratic Republic of the Congo Highlights:
· WHO reported on July 7th that the Ebola Treatment Centers in the Ituri Province were at capacity.
· The DRC Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Security (MOH) announced on July 11th that 10 ambulances will arrive to booster intervention capacities in Bunia.
· Health cards were also deployed by the DRC MOH which will facilitate and secure the payment of health workers engaged in the response.
· As of July 12th, the Ebola Treatment Center at the Bunia General Reference Hospital was expanded:
o The center’s capacity was increased from 52 to 107 beds.
· With UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) support three nurseries have been set up next to Ebola treatment centers as of July 8th.
· On July 9th, the UN Senior Ebola Coordinator reported that a WHO laboratory was being set up in the Samaritan's Purse Ebola Treatment Center. This new lab will increase the testing capabilities.
· The UN Populations Fund (UNFPA) on July 9th, distributed Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Kits in four health facilities in the Health Zones of Bunia and Rwampara:
o These facilities include Bunia General Reference Hospital, Kigonze Health Center, Betokomba Health Center, and Rwampara Health Center.
o The kits will be delivered to maternity wards to strengthen the safety of midwives and frontline health professionals.
o More than 2,800 items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) have been delivered. The PPE includes:
ü 1,500 disposable surgical gowns.
ü 630 protective medical masks.
ü 720 visors and face shields.
· Displacement Site Response:
o More than two million forcibly displaced people live in Ebola-affected or high-risk areas of eastern DRC, including 320,000 refugees and asylum-seekers.
o OCHA is urging increased resources to support life-saving interventions across 69 displacement sites in Ituri, where over 273,000 displaced people.
o The UN Refugee Agency has reported that no cases have been reported among refugees in the DRC to date. However, 19 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are among confirmed cases.
o The DRC MOH reported that cases have been reported in the Kigonze displaced person’s site. In response on July 11th, the DRC MOH has established an Ebola Treatment Center in this site.
· The Africa CDC in collaboration with the DRC MOH has deployed multidisciplinary expert teams to priority health zones, which account for 83% of cases:
o These teams have conducted rapid assessments and developed, in collaboration with the core teams of the health zones, intensification plans that include capacity building and the deployment of community relays.
· The Logistics and Telecommunications Cluster (LTC) reported that they have supported the UN Department of Safety and Security in repairing damaged radio repeaters in Bunia, restoring the dedicated UN security communications channel after six months downtime.
· LTC is also initiating local procurement of a solar backup power system to sustain satellite connectivity at Mongbwalu General Hospital.
Uganda Highlights:
· The Uganda Ministry of Health (MOH) on July 5th through an agreement with the DRC MOH has deployed additional medics, two mobile laboratories, and logistics support to curb cross-border transmission.
· On July 9th, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has delivered 18 vehicles that will support Safe and Dignified Burial operations.
· The Uganda MOH as of July 12th reported that a total of 5,465 travelers have been screened:
o This includes 2,105 inbound and 1,714 outbound travelers.
