Conflict Highlights:

·       The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) retook control of Wad Medani which is the state capital of Aj Jazirah on January 11th.

 

Humanitarian Assistance Highlights:

·       There are now 12.3 million people displaced and at least 3.2 million people have sought refuge in Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic.

·       The UN and its partners have targeted 14.7 million people to receive humanitarian assistance and they have reached 15.6 million people.

·       Humanitarian organizations are assisting the affected population in Wad Medani:

o   Food, Water, Access to Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and health-care services are the most urgent priority needs.

o   Basic services, including water and electricity, are unavailable in the area.

o   Most of the solar devices have been stolen, and the primary health-care centers have either been looted or destroyed, causing a severe shortage of health services and essential medicines.

o   Community kitchens are being organized to provide hot meals to people in need.

·       Healthcare and Public Health Update:

o   The Wad Medani Teaching Hospital is severely damaged and barely functional, with most care units destroyed and all pharmacies looted or destroyed.

o   The Al Arkawit health center is functioning relatively well.

o   Al Managil Hospital, which is receiving injured people from Wad Medani, faces a severe shortage of essential medical supplies, including trauma kits.

o   The Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) reported the following activities between January 11-25:

ü  SAPA reported on January 11th, that in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) they are supporting three healthcare centers in South Darfur. This support included facility upgrades, solar power, sanitation campaigns, and incentives for healthcare workers.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

ü  On January 16th, SAPA announced the reopening of the Abu Haraz Hospital.

ü  A SAPA led convoy carrying medicine and medical support equipment arrived at the City of Madani in the Elgezira State on January 24th.

ü  The SAPA reported on January 25th, that they have begun work on restoring staff support facilities and kidney disease and services at the Al-Jazirah Hospital.

ü  A medical mission arrived at Wad Madani on January 25th.  This mission’s goal is to restore essential healthcare services in the region:

Ø  The mission consists of 37 highly qualified healthcare professionals.

Ø  This mission has been undertaken with the Sudanese Ministry of Health, UN Children’s Fund and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Ø  This team will also be conducting a medical needs assessment and remain in place for one month.

o   WHO reported that as of January 23rd, there are over 51,200 cases of Cholera and over 300 people have died.

o   WHO and the Ministry of Health facilitated the deployment of Samaritans Purse Field Hospital in Gedaref. This hospital since December 25th has treated over 1,000 patients.

·       Food Security Update:

o   The Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) has reported the following activities:

ü  The SRCS on January 27th has distributed non-food items to 1,200 families in Al-Jazeera Aba camp in Rabak locality

ü  On January 28th, they distributed food baskets to 2,000 families in the Greater Madani Locality.

o   The World Food Programme (WFP) provided the following updates:

ü  On January 21st, WFP delivered 253 metric tons (MT) of mixed food commodities (sorghum, pluses, oil and salt) and six million MT of nutrition supplies to Wad Medani, which is enough to provide one-month emergency rations to about 21,000 people.

ü  The WFP reached Wad Madani for the first time in a year on January 22nd. The area has 30,000 people at risk of famine.  They are following up with regular deliveries to this area.

ü  On January 23rd, the WFP was successful in delivering enough food aid for 80,000 people in the White Nile River.

·       The Humanitarian Response Plan for Sudan has requested $2.7 billion and has received $1.8 billion.

 

Violations of International Humanitarian Law Highlights:

·       There have been cases of gender-based violence (GBV) reported at Wad Medani as of January 11th.

·       The Youth Citizens Observers Network on January 14th reported that they have received reports of extrajudicial killings and ethnic targeting of citizens in some villages and neighborhoods in El Jezirah State and the city of Wad Madani following the SAF’s control over them.

·       The Humanitarian Research Lab documented that between December 9 to January 14 that the RSF received three FH-95s (Feihong) drones at the Nyala Airport:

o   These drones have significant electronic surveillance and warfare capabilities and can be equipped with air-to-ground munitions.

o   The FH-95 is manufactured by the Chinese company Aerospace Times Feihong Technology Company.

·       On January 25th, the Saudi Hospital in El Fasher was attacked which killed 70 people and injured 19 people.  This hospital was the only functional hospital in the area.

·       On January 26th, the RSF launched its biggest attack to date on El-Fasher between January 21-25, encircling the city from both east and west. RSF is threatening the exit route for civilians and others out of El-Fasher. This is the first time RSF has been seen to the west in large numbers since the start of its siege of El-Fasher in May 2024.

·       SAPA reported on January 26th of the attack on the Saudi Hospital in El Fasher, which reportedly killed 70 people and injured 19.
