Sudanese Civil War Situation Report #18




Conflict Highlights:

·         As of September 21st, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has lasted more than 500 days of continuous fighting.

 

Humanitarian Assistance Highlights:

·         According to the UN Migration Agency a total of 10.3 million have fled their homes in the country, which makes this the largest displacement crisis worldwide:

o   8 million people are displaced within the country.

o   2.3 million have fled to neighboring countries, which includes Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia, the Central African Republic, and Uganda.

·         The Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) in concert with the UN Refugee Agency launched on September 3rd a multi-survey program for displaced persons and refugees in Sennar locality.

·         As of September 9th, at least 25 million people (half the country’s population) are in dire need of humanitarian aid:

o   14.7 million require urgent assistance for a range of life-saving support.

·         Recent heavy rains and flooding have affected an estimated 491,000 people across 15 states:

o   At least 69 people have been killed and another 112 people have been injured.

o   About 35,520 homes have been destroyed and nearly 45,000 homes have been damaged.

·         Healthcare and Public Health Updates:

o   A total of 5 million people need urgent lifesaving health assistance in the country.

o   An ongoing cholera outbreak has affected eight states in Sudan, and thousands of people are at risk of cholera.

o   The World Health Organization (WHO) has scaled up disease surveillance and vaccination coverage.  

o   WHO and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are supporting Sudan’s efforts to address the cholera outbreak:

ü  On September 9th, they delivered 404,000 doses of oral cholera vaccine.

ü  On September 10th, a four-day vaccination campaign utilizing 51,000 doses occurred in Wad Alhilu.

ü  In Kassala, the vaccination campaign ran from September 16-21 with more campaigns planned for other affected states.

o   As of September 9th, WHO and their partners delivered five metric tons of medical supplies to support over 175,000 people for non-communicable diseases, mental health, malaria, trauma and emergency surgery.

o   WHO on September 17th supported the dispatch of three trucks carrying 24 metric tons of essential medical supplies for primary health care, severe acute malnutrition and cholera to four partners operating in South Darfur.

·         Food Security Update:

o   Famine conditions have been confirmed in Zamzam Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp near Al Fasher in North Darfur State. Thousands more are likely to experience similar conditions in 13 other areas at risk of famine.

o   The World Food Programme (WFP) since the start of the conflict has reached 8.8 million people:

ü  2.1 million in the Darfur States

ü  1.8 million in Khartoum and Gezira

ü  529,000 in the Kordofan States

ü  4.4 million across the rest of the country.

o   On September 12th, the SRCS in Central Darfur delivered 1,000 cartons of therapeutic biscuits to the city of Zalingei.

o   As of September 20th, WFP has delivered food assistance (flour, lentils, oil & salt and vital supplies) to 180,000 people in Zamzam. 

o   WFP is working with over 100 community kitchens in Khartoum which are providing 175,000 hot meals daily as of September 19th. 

·         The UN has requested $2.7 Billion for humanitarian assistance.

 

Violations of International Humanitarian Law Highlights:

·         As of September 19th, the Youth Citizens Observers Network (YCON) reported that the RSF shelled the city of El Fasher which was crowded with refugees.

·         As of September 9th, WHO reported that there have been over 100 attacks on healthcare facilities.

 

Cultural Heritage Protection:

The Sudan Heritage Protection Initiative reports that as of August 3rd that the following cultural heritages sites are in jeopardy due to the civil war:

·         River Nile’s archaeological sites (Naqa and Musawwarat and es-Sufra).

·         National Museum

·         Ethnographic Museum

·         Meroe Pyramids
