Russian Invasion of Ukraine Situation Report #103




Military and Diplomatic Highlights: 

·         The Ukrainian military is reporting the following Russian losses:

o   422,310 Soldiers (Wounded or Killed)

o   6,706 Tanks

o   12,798 Armored vehicles

o   10,375 Artillery

o   7,998 Drones

o   347 Aircraft

o   325 Helicopters

o   1,919 Cruise missiles

o   26 Ships

·         Russia has continued to launch drone attacks on Ukraine civilian targets:

o   On March 5th, Ukrainian air defense shot down 38 out of 48 drones.

o   33 out of 37 drones were shot down on March 7th. 

·         Norway has agreed to provide 140 million Euros to procure artillery shells for Ukraine.

 

War and Atrocity Crimes Investigations Highlights: 

·         The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reports that more than10,000 civilians have been killed and nearly 20,000 injured.

·         The United States has joined the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children.  This coalition supports the safe return of all Ukrainian children who have been unlawfully deported or forcibly transferred by Russia.

·         The Humanitarian Research Lab and the Conflict Observatory have released a report that has verified 66 conflict-related damage to power generation and transmission infrastructure.

·         The International Criminal Court on March 5th issue arrest warrants for:

o   Sergei Ivanovich Kobylash, a Lieutenant General in the Russian Armed Forces

o   Viktor Nikolayevich Sokolov, an Admiral in the Russian Navy

o   Both individuals bear criminal responsibility for the following three crimes:

ü  The war crime of directing attacks against civilian objects.

ü  Causing excessive incidental harm to civilians or damage to civilian objects.

ü  Crimes against humanity of inhumane acts.

·         The UN reports that up to a third of the country is suspected of being contaminated by mines. 

 

Humanitarian Impact and Response and Recovery Highlights:

·         On March 6th, a UN humanitarian convoy reached Prykolotne village in the Kharkiv region, delivering vital supplies to people in need.

·         The World Health Organization’s (WHO) 59 Mobile Vaccination Clinics are continuing to provide vaccinations and medical consultations in remote rural areas. 

·         The European Union is continuing to provide medical evacuations of patients from Ukraine.  As of March 5th, 3,139 patients have been transferred to hospitals in 22 European countries.

·         The World Bank has identified the top areas of Ukraine that will need assistance recovering.  They include:

o   Housing  

o   Transport

o   Commerce and industry  

o   Agriculture  

o   Energy  

 

Russian Dis-information Campaign Highlights:

·         On February 19th, the Russian commander of the Army’s radiation, chemical and biological protection force falsely accused the United States of violating its international obligations by retaining chemical weapons and transferring them to Ukraine.

·         A Russian disinformation campaign falsely claimed there was a Ukrainian assassination attempt on Tucker Carlson.

·         Russia has falsely claimed that if President Putin cut off gas supplies to Europe in 2022, that the EU would freeze.

 

Cultural Heritage Protection Highlights:

·         On March 6th, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) verified damage to 345 cultural heritage sites.  They include:

o   127 Religious sites

o   153 Buildings of historical and/or artistic interest

o   31 Museums

o   19 Monuments

o   14 Libraries

o   1 Archive

·         The World Monuments Fund has announced $1 million in funding from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation to support its Ukraine Heritage Response Fund.  The funding will help protect vital heritage sites across the country.
