Russian Invasion of Ukraine Situation Report #101




Military and Diplomatic Highlights: 

·         The Ukrainian military is reporting the following Russian losses:

o   387,060 Soldiers (Wounded or Killed)

o   6,331 Tanks

o   11,792 Armored vehicles

o   9,274 Artillery

o   7,146 Drones

o   332 Aircraft

o   324 Helicopters

o   24 Ships

·         The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense reported that the average daily number of Russian casualties in Ukraine has risen by almost 300 during 2023.  If the numbers continue at the current rate over the next year, Russia will have lost over half a million personnel in Ukraine.

·         On January 31st, 207 Ukrainian defenders returned home from the Russian captivity.

·         International Assistance:

o   The European Union (EU) has agreed to 50 billion Euros in financial aid for Ukraine.  The EU has already provided 28 billion Euros in military assistance since the start of the conflict.    

o   The Lithuania has provided detonation systems and thousands of rounds of ammunition for anti-tank grenade launchers.

o   On January 31st, Germany has approved a new military aid package, which includes:

ü  3 Wisent 1 mine clearing tanks

ü  1 Beaver bridge-laying tank

ü  24 Armored Personnel Carriers

ü  4 BV206 tracked all-terrain vehicles.

ü  IRIS-T SLS missiles

ü  14 mine ploughs

ü  1 naval mine clearance system

ü  1 Satcom surveillance system

ü  4 border protection vehicles

ü  1,040 rounds 155mm ammunition

ü  450 snow chains

ü  194,000 single module group rations

o   The Netherlands on January 30th has approved a 122 million Euro military aid package.  This assistance will be used to purchase artillery shells, assorted equipment and improving Ukraine’s cyber defenses. 

·         The International Atomic Energy Agency reported that the Director-General will travel to the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant next week to discuss and assess important issues and recent developments related to fragile nuclear safety and security situation at the site. 

 

War and Atrocity Crimes Investigations Highlights: 

  • The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine reported that between January 26 to February 2, there has been 304 new war crimes registered. 

  • The UN reports that two humanitarian workers with the Evangelical Reformed Church of Switzerland were killed on February 1st in Southern Ukraine. 

  • On February 1st, Russian strikes damaged a humanitarian distribution hub in Kherson. 

 

Humanitarian Impact and Response and Recovery Highlights:

  • The Ukrainian Red Cross on February 2nd has installed mobile shelters to protect residents in Ingulets, Bilozerka and Korabelny. This project was funded by the Switzerland Red Cross.

  • The Ukrainian Red Cross has deployed four mobile bath and laundry units in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhya oblasts.

  • The World Health Organization reports that as of January 31st, an estimated 1,471 persons have been reached with humanitarian health assistance in the response.

  • World Central Kitchen as of January 31st, has delivered more than 255 million meals throughout the country. 

  • The EU is continuing to provide energy supplies, so far, they have provided:  

o   5,987 Power generators

o   At least 10,000,000 energy repair items

o   2,701 transformers

  • The Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC) has provided the following updates:

o   On January 25th, the ETC will provide Ukrainian authorities in the heavily impacted town of Novyi Buh in Mykolaiv internet services in eight community institutions. 

o   The ETC is working on extending the VHF radio network to an additional eight sites.

o   Since December 2023, all five humanitarian truck convoy missions going to the frontlines to deliver aid have been equipped with the ETC Remote Site on Vehicle solution.

 

Russian Dis-information Campaign Highlights:

  • Russia has falsely denied the arms deal with North Korea.  This deal includes more than one million artillery shells, some of which will be used in Ukraine.

  • Russia has resurrected a MH17 conspiracy theory to discredit Ukraine.

  • The EU East Stratcom Task Force Disinformation Review has summarized several falsehoods being spread by Russia this week. 

 

Cultural Heritage Protection Highlights:

  • On February 1st, the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Information Policy reported that Russia bombarded the Monument of National Importance in the Kherson Oblast.
