Philippines 7.8 Earthquake Situation Report #1

Highlights: Â
·      On June 8th, a 7.8 earthquake occurred offshore west of Maasim, Sarangani province:
o  The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Earthquake Intensity Scale rated this earthquake an 8 out of 10 (very destructive).
o  There have been more than 138 aftershocks, ranging from magnitudes 1.3 to 6.7.
o  PHIVOLCS issued a tsunami evacuation alert for the coastal areas in Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-tawi, Sulu, Basilan, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato.
o  Tsunami waves of around one meter were recorded in Maasim and Kiamba in Sarangani province, and as far as Samar province. The tsunami evacuation alert has since been lifted.
o  Similar tsunami alerts were also initiated for Japan, Indonesia, and Australia.
o  The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center reported that there was no tsunami danger to the North American coasts (United States and Canada).
·      Initial Impacts:
o  There are more than 30 fatalities, 12 people are reported missing and 134 peoplehave been injured.
o  General Santos City is considered to be the most impacted.
o  Numerous homes, government buildings, hospitals and schools have been damaged or destroyed.
o  Power and telecommunications outages have been reported, and damaged roads and bridges are constraining access to some communities.
o  Over 6,200 schools in the affected areas have been closed pending safety assessments.
·      Philippine Government Response:
o  The government has activated national response mechanisms.
o  The national government is ready to address any shortage and necessary support. Currently, the situation remains manageable at the local government level.
o  The top priority is meeting the needs of the hospitals in the affected areas. The Office of Civil Defense will be sending generators and fuel supplies to ensure continuous power supply.
o  The Philippines Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has pre-positioned 5,825 family food packs in the municipalities of Alabel, Kiamba, and Glan, which can now be distributed to quake-affected families.
o  Amid weak signals and limited communication in some affected areas, the DSWD has deployed their Mobile Command Center to coordinate response and recovery efforts.
o  The DSWD has set-up more than 25 family tents to serve as temporary shelters for affected families.
·      The Philippine Red Cross is deploying volunteers, ambulances, emergency teams, food trucks, and water tankers to support affected communities.
·      Regional and International Assistance:
o  The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre) reported that several member states have indicated their readiness to support the Philippines.
o  The AHA Centre Emergency Operations Center alert level was raised to Orange and is continuing to monitor the situation and offer any assistance. Â
o  The World Food Programme has begun deploying staff and emergency equipment to support DSWD.
