Venezuela Earthquakes Situation Report #7

Highlights:  

·       As of July 22nd, there have been 1,463 reported aftershocks.

·       There are 5,398 fatalities and 16,740 people have been injured.

·       A total of 17,907 people has been displaced.

·       The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Venezuelan Red Cross (VRC) have identified three critical areas for humanitarian assistance in the short and medium term:

o   Primary health care

o   Mental health care

o   Access to safe drinking water

·       The IFRC and the VRC are focusing their efforts on distributing humanitarian aid, delivering health services and carrying out further needs assessments. The current assessments have found:

o   Families still depend on bottled water to drink, wash and cook.

o   Access to sanitation also remains limited, raising the risk of disease outbreaks in the areas where displaced people are staying.

o   Survivors are also living with anxiety, fear, sadness and sleeplessness.

·       The United Nations system and its partner organizations continue scaling up the multisectoral response to the emergency:

o   The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) on July 21st reported that a shipment of 1.15 million doses of the vaccines from Brazil, which included:

ü  Pentavalent vaccine, which protects children against five serious diseases (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae type b),

ü  102,000 doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine

ü  48,000 doses of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine against tuberculosis

ü  20 vials of Anti-Arachnid Antivenom

o   The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance and their partners are assisting women and girls in transitional camps with safe spaces, case management and specialized counseling to address gender-based violence.

o   The EU on July 17th completed the third Humanitarian Air Bridge flight which delivered 48 tons of medical and shelter supplies.

o   The World Food Programme (WFP) logistics services have supported non-governmental organizations and UN agencies, with 261 metric tons transported and over 1,300 m³ stored.

o   The U.S. State Department reported on July 20th, that Starlink has sent over 1,600 kits and equipped nearly 100 organizations with satellite internet.

o   Starlink Mobile has also connected over 700,000 people with free satellite text messaging capabilities.

·       Food Security Update:

o   WFP continues to provide food assistance to communities impacted by the devastation. The WFP has already reached more than 100,000 people and is aiming to reach up to 500,000 people over the first three months.

o   The WFP is tailoring its support to each community’s specific circumstances and needs:

ü  Hot meals for people in shelters and community kitchens.

ü  Ready-to-eat rations for people without the means to cook.

ü  Family food baskets for households whose homes remain habitable, but whose livelihoods and access to markets have been disrupted.

ü  Pre-paid electronic vouchers in areas where markets are functioning.

·       On July 18th, the VRC announced that CENTURY 21 through Compass International Holdings, has joined the Global Appeal of IFRC with a fund seeking to raise $25,000 to strengthen VRCs humanitarian response.

·       On July 20th, the UN Country Humanitarian Team reported that to assist 1.3 million people over the next six months will require an additional $299 million in funding.
