Israel/Hamas War Situation Report #54

Military and Diplomatic Highlights:

·         The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that on June 28th, three drones and 25 rockets were launched from Lebanon.  The IDF responded to these launches with artillery fire.

·         On July 1st, the IDF reported that they killed 100 terrorists and destroyed 100 structures being used as Hamas in Central Gaza.

·         Between June 28 and July 1st, three Israeli soldiers were killed in Gaza.

·         On July 3rd, the IDF reported that they killed Muhammad Neamah Naser, the Hezbollah Commander of the Aziz Unit.

Civil Protection and Humanitarian Assistance Highlights:

·         The deteriorating law and order situation is severely hindering humanitarian actors from collecting aid at the Kerem Shalom Crossing for distribution within Gaza.

·         The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) reported that between June 1-30, there were 115 planned humanitarian assistance missions coordinated with Israel into Northern Gaza:

o   Only 46% of these missions were facilitated.

o   54% of the missions were either impeded, denied and/or cancelled due to logistical, operational or security reasons.

·         Between June 1-30, there were 299 humanitarian assistance missions into Southern Gaza:

o   71.2% of these missions were facilitated.

o   28.8% of these missions were either impeded, denied and/or cancelled.

·         U.S. Central Command reported on June 28th that over 19.4 million tons of supplies have been delivered through the temporary pier since May 17th.  The pier has been moved from the coast and back to Ashdod, Israel due to adverse weather and heightened sea state.

·         On June 28th, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) received two aid trucks carrying flour which was donated and supported by the Kuwait and Jordanian Red Crescent Societies.  This flour has already been distributed to 1,240 displaced families.

·         As of June 29th, the PRCS continues to work to reactivate their headquarters in Northern Gaza.

·         PRCS on June 30th, in collaboration with the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committees and Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children established the first shelter site for displaced people with disabilities (PwD) in Deir al Balah:

o   This site will host 100 people and provide support services for these individuals.

·         Healthcare and Public Health Updates:

o   The PRCS on June 27th had to halt the use of 18 ambulances throughout Gaza due to fuel shortages.  These ambulances represent 36% of their ambulance fleet.

o   The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that on June 28th, 21 children were evacuated outside of Gaza.  However, over 10,000 patients still need medical evacuations.

o   On July 2nd, WHO reported that the European Gaza Hospital is now completely empty:

ü  320 patients and staff have been evacuated following the evacuation orders in Khan Younis.

ü  Most of the patients were referred to the Nasser Medical Complex, which is now at full capacity with more than 350 patients. This hospital also has a shortage of medical supplies and drugs for surgery.

ü  The Nassar Medical Complex has transferred some patients to the PRCS Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, which is now overcrowded.

o   PRCS on July 3rd began transporting medical and logistical equipment from the Al-Quds Hospital and the PRCS’s warehouses in the Tel Al-Hawa area. This equipment will be used to set up medical points and emergency clinics elsewhere in Gaza.

o   The UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) continues to report that piles of garbage and sewage continue to accumulate in Gaza, rotting in the heat near displacement sites. The extreme heat and lack of clear water continue to fuel the spread of infectious diseases, exacerbating the burden on an already overwhelmed and severely under-resourced health facilities.

·         Food Security Update:

o   The Norwegian Refugee Council has reported that food on the market is largely unaffordable for vulnerable households, many of whom have lost their income or exhausted their savings.

o   World Central Kitchen (WCK) is working with the American Near East Refugee Aid to distribute meals to Palestinian families sheltering in northern Gaza. They have provided more than 3,000 boxes of meals ready-to-eat.

Violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Highlights:

·         On June 29th, the PRCS had to evacuate their temporary administrative headquarters in the Mawasi Khan Younis area due to shrapnel falling on the building and direct shelling.

·         On July 1st, Israel released 50 Palestinian prisoners, including Mohammed Abu Salmiya, the director of the Al Shifa Hospital.
