Hamas attack on Israel Situation Report #17

Military and Diplomatic Highlights: · The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on November 19th in response to launches over the last 24-hours, IDF fighter jets struck Hezbollah terrorist targets in Lebanon which included: o Hezbollah military compound, a military post and infrastructure used for directing terrorist activity. · The Houthis hijacked a cargo ship in the Southern Red Sea near Yemen. The crew were taken hostage. The IDF reported that no Israeli citizens were on board and the ship was not an Israeli flagged ship. Civil Protection and Humanitarian Assistance Highlights (Gaza Strip): · As of November 19th, there are nearly 930,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) that are sheltering in 156 UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) installations throughout the Gaza Strip: o Over 15% of these IDPs are estimated to have a disability but most of the installations hosting them are not adequately equipped for their needs. o Overcrowding in the UNRWA installations is contributing to the spread of diseases, including acute respiratory illness and diarrhea, prompting environmental and health concerns: ü On average, these installations have one shower unit for every 700 people and a single toilet for every 150 people. o On November 20th, an estimated 25,000 additional people fled the north through the Salah Ad Deen corridor: ü Due to the lack of space in existing shelters in the south, thousands of IDPs are sleeping out in the open, against the walls of shelters, seeking food and water, as well as protection. Their situation has significantly worsened in the past 24 hours, as they became exposed to the heavy rains. · Another humanitarian convoy of 40 trucks entered Gaza on November 20th. · Healthcare and Public Health Update: o Jordan has dispatched 180 healthcare workers to Gaza to establish a second Jordanian field hospital in Khan Younis that will have a capacity of 150 beds. o Attacks and shortages of fuel, medicines, safe water, and other essential resources have resulted in hospital bed capacity across Gaza declining from 3,500 beds to 1,400 beds. o The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs evacuated 31 premature infants from the Al-Shifa Hospital: ü These infants were evacuated based on their poor health conditions caused by power outages in nurseries and their consumption of contaminated water and milk, leading to health complications that require urgent treatment. ü 12 infants were flown to hospitals in Cairo. ü Three infants continue to receive treatment at the Emarati Hospital in southern Gaza. · The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescents and the Egyptian Red Crescent Society reported on their actions since the start of the conflict: o Utilized 155 aircraft to deliver relief supplies. o A total of 1,168 trucks have delivered relief supplies to Gaza. These supplies included: ü 185 trucks carried relief supplies. ü 267 trucks carried medical supplies. · The EU has provided 15 humanitarian flights carrying 619 tons of relief supplies. · The EU through the Civil Protection Mechanism has dispatched the following resources: o Cyprus requested and received 1,000 shelter items for a potential refugee influx. o Egypt requested and received medical supplies. o Two buses were provided to transport evacuees from the border crossing point in Rafah to larger cities in Egypt. · The International Labor Organization assessed the impact on the labor market in the Gaza Strip. It is estimated that 61% of employment has been lost in the Gaza Strip. Violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL): · Hamas is still holding over 200 civilians which includes 40 children. · The PRCS reports that as of November 20th, 5,600 children have been killed in the Gaza Strip and 3,500 children are still missing under the rubble. · As of November 21st, UNRWA is reporting that 108 personnel have now been killed. · On November 20th, the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahiya in Northern Gaza came under attack: o The attack killed 12 people which included patients and their companions. o This is the fifth time the hospital has been hit. o The hospital no longer has fuel and is experiencing severe shortages of water, essential medicines, and supplies. · Israel shelled the Al-Awda Hospital on November 21st. This attack killed four healthcare workers which included three Doctors Without Borders physicians. · WHO on November 21st reported that one of their staff (Dima Abdullatif Mohammed Alhaj) who worked as the patient administrator at the Limb Reconstruction Centre was killed with her husband, their six-month-old infant and her two brothers when her parents’ house in Southern Gaza was bombed. · On November 20th, the Committee to Protect Journalists reported that 50 journalists have been killed. This included 45 Palestinians, four Israelis and one Lebanese journalists. Another 11 were injured, three are reported as missing and 18 have been arrested. Dis-Information Highlights: · While Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip are real, some videos circulating on social media appear to show an abandoned mine in California. · An Israeli media watchdog group questioning the coverage of the October 7th by the Associated Press and CNN which has led to a false assertions that these media outlets knew about the attacks before they occurred.
