Haiti Unrest Situation Report #15

Highlights:
· Armed attacks by gangs contains throughout Haiti. The most recent incidents were:
o On September 15th, armed groups attacked the commune of Verrettes, specifically the 1st communal section of Liancourt in Artibonite:
ü The sub-police station and several homes were burned down.
ü Three people were killed and at least 10 people were injured.
ü At least 3,180 people (770 households) were displaced:
ü The vast majority (97%) remain within the commune, with 99% hosted by families and 1% temporarily settled on two former hosting sites.
ü These displacements add to the 940 people already displaced in the same area two months earlier, following the July 19 attacks in Dessalines and Liancourt.
o More than 2,000 people have been displaced following the armed attack carried out on September 18 by members of armed groups against the commune of Bassin-Bleu, in the Nord-Ouest department:
ü One person was killed.
ü The police station and several businesses were set on fire, and several homes were looted.
ü This was the first security incident recorded in this department.
o The UN Migration Agency (IOM) reports that the gangs have control over key transportation routes which has deprived communities with essential goods and services.
· Humanitarian Assistance Update:
o As of September 8th, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that six million people need humanitarian assistance and more than half of the country is food insecure.
o In August, more than 27,000 migrants were deported back to Haiti
o IOM and their partners in the month of August provided assistance to more than 100,000 people in the Hinche and Arbonite.
o On September 10th, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) released $9 million through the UN Central Emergency Response Fund:
ü $2 million has been earmarked to address food security.
