Democratic Republic of the Congo Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Outbreak Situation Report #20
Global Highlights
· The World Health Organization (WHO) is reporting that as of September 19th there are 8,111 cases (7,693 confirmed, 417 suspected & 1 probable):
o A total of 3,702 people has died (3,701 confirmed & 1 probable).
o 1,898 people have recovered.
o After four months, the outbreak has been contained mostly in the northeastern part of the country.
o WHO reported on September 16th that transmission in the Ituri province has decreased.
· As of September 12th, the DRCs Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare (DRC MOH) reported that 70,000 vaccine doses have been received.
· WHO on September 14th deployed senior experts in disease surveillance, infection prevention and control, risk communication and community engagement, logistics and security to strengthen the response in Isiro and across the province.
· As of September 19th, the UN Senior Coordinator reported that the response to the outbreak in Ituri has been gaining ground, due to:
o Surveillance stepped up in schools.
o Support for people who have recovered.
o Training for frontline staff has increased.
· On September 21st, a research vaccination program was launched in the Ituri province:
o The program includes 20,000 doses of the ERVEBO vaccine.
o It is targeting health workers and other frontline personnel.
· A follow-up program for Ebola survivors began on September 21st:
o This program started at a clinic in Bunia and involves the DRC MOH and WHO.
o The clinic will provide survivors with tailored services after they leave treatment facilities.
· Humanitarian Response Update:
o The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) reported that in North Kivu, more than 197,500 people received food assistance in August.
o On September 10th, the World Food Programme (WFP) has dispatched 35 metric tons of high-energy biscuits from Bunia to assist over70,000 people.
o On September 16th, WFP reported that 10 million people in eastern DRC are struggling to access food.
o OCHA reported on September 19th, that there are more than 312,900 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) living in 69 sites continue to face urgent humanitarian needs.
