Highlights:
· Between March 30 and April 15th, the security situation deteriorated sharply in the Centre department (Mirebalais and Saut-d'Eau) following a series of attacks by armed groups:
o 76 people were killed.
o The armed groups also launched an assault on the Mirebalais police station and the prison, allowing more than 500 inmates to escape.
o The violence resulted in the destruction of the Saut-d'Eau and Mirebalais police stations.
o As of April 24th, a total of 51,489 people were displaced.
· The humanitarian response is more difficult by several obstacles:
o Instability of telephone networks.
o Power cuts limiting communications.
o Difficulties in accessing money transfer services.
· Healthcare and Public Health Update:
o Health services in Mirebalais have been severely disrupted as health facilities are no longer functional due to the evacuation of staff.
o The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has donated 1.5 metric tons of medicines and supplies to the Health Directorate of the Centre department. These supplies can support approximately 50 surgical interventions and over1,000 primary health care consultations.
o Cholera remains a concern, there has been a reported upsurge of suspected cases in Cap Haïtien (17 suspected cases).
· Food Security Update:
o At least 5.7 million people (half of the population) are projected to face acute food insecurity (Integrated Food Security (IPC) Phase 3+) through June, including 2.1 million in Emergency (IPC 4) and 8,400 in Catastrophe (IPC 5).
o The food insecurity is driven by escalating violence, mass displacement, and economic collapse.
o The World Food Programme (WFP) is reporting the following achievements:
ü The WFP on April 15th through an air charter flight delivered 19 tons of lifesaving supplies (health, hygiene and shelter items) from partners.
ü On April 22nd, the WFP distributed over 22,000 meals to the displaced people from the Mirebalais
ü WFP on April 25th distributed food to nearly 14,000 displaced people from Kenscoff, as well as host families already facing high levels of food insecurity.
