Democratic Republic of the Congo & Uganda Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Outbreak Situation Report #8

Global Highlights:
· As of June 19th, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported a total of 1,066 cases (915 confirmed & 151 suspected):
o A total of 235 people has died (234 confirmed & 1 suspected).
o 88 people have recovered.
o The virus has an incubation period of between 2 and 21 days. More cases will likely materialize in the next two weeks given the upward trend of confirmed cases.
· WHO reported on June 19th that 75 healthcare workers have been infected and 17 of them have died.
· Basic personal protective equipment in the affected areas is still in short-supply.
· The Africa Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (Africa CDC) reported that as of June 17th the outbreak is not yet under control. There are still critical gaps in contact tracing, supplies and a $21.5 million funding gap.
· On June 10th, WHO updated the risk assessment for this outbreak:
o Very High: Democratic Republic of the Congo.
o High: Uganda.
o High: Countries that share land borders with the DRC and Uganda.
o Low: Rest of Africa and Globally.
Democratic Republic of the Congo Highlights:
· The DRC Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Security (DRC MOH) on June 15th reported that they have received a second batch of 16.5 tons of supplies from WHO.
· WHO and the DRC MOH reported on June 17th that they are strengthening the Ebola Treatment Center in the Ituri Province:
o Individual isolation rooms have been constructed that meets infection prevention and control standards.
o A 10,000-litre water tank has been installed to ensure reliable water supply for patient care and facility operations.
· On June 20th the DRC MOH announced that they are making all healthcare free in health facilities listed by the health zones of Ituri province for the entire duration of the epidemic.
· Humanitarian access in the eastern part of the country remains constrained:
o Armed groups are operating in the region.
o Community aggression on local responses driven by mistrust and misinformation undermines ongoing humanitarian and public health operations.
· The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) reported on June 12th that the Ituri Province is hosting more than 923,000 people in displacement sites. These sites are suspectable for high levels of transmission of the virus.
Uganda Highlights:
· OCHA on June 18th has allocated $4 million from the UN Emergency Fund to support the country’s response to the outbreak:
o The funding will support health services, protection and logistics across 29 high-risk districts, strengthening preparedness, surveillance and response.
· As of June 18th, Uganda’s Ministry of Health reported that around 620 contacts have completed their 21-day follow-up period.
