Highlights:
· The World Health Organization (WHO) on September 14th reported the following:
o There are a total of 54 cases (34 confirmed).
o 27 people have died with a case fatality rate of 50%.
o A total of 885 contacts have been identified and 80.8% have been contacted.
o A total of 13 villages are affected by the outbreak, mainly in the Kasaï Province.
o On September 11th, a new case was confirmed that was 70 kilometers from the current epicenter of the outbreak.
o The first two patients to recover from Ebola have just been discharged from the treatment centre in Bulape health zone on September 16th.
· The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Ministry of Health, through the National Public Health Institute and the National Public Health Emergency Operations Centre is coordinating the overall response to the outbreak, with technical support from WHO and health partners.
· WHO has deployed 48 national and international experts, with 31 stationed in Bulape Health Zone to support the government response efforts.
· On September 16th, WHO delivered GeneXpert Ebola cartridges and other vital lab supplies to enable rapid detection.
· Vaccination and Treatment Update:
o WHO reported that on September 14th vaccinations of frontline health workers and contacts of people infected with Ebola virus disease has begun in Bulape health zone,
o An initial 400 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine from the country’s stockpile of 2,000 doses have been delivered to Bulape. Additional doses will be delivered to the affected localities in the coming days.
o The International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision has approved around 45,000 additional Ebola vaccine doses to be shipped to the DRC.
o In addition to the vaccines, treatment courses of the monoclonal antibody therapy drug have also been sent to treatment centers in Bulape for clinical care.
· WHO still assesses the overall public health risk posed by the ongoing outbreak as high at the national level, moderate at the regional level and low at the global level.
