Military and Diplomatic Highlights: 

·         The Ukrainian military is reporting the following Russian losses:

o   369,160 Soldiers (Wounded or Killed)

o   6,065 Tanks

o   11,269 Armored vehicles

o   8,728 Artillery

o   6,848 Drones

o   329 Aircraft

o   324 Helicopters

o   1,806 Cruise missiles

·         On January 8th, Ukrainian military shot down 18 cruise missiles and eight drones. 

·         The United Kingdom’s (UK) Ministry of Defense has announced the following:

o   The UK has continued training Ukrainian soldiers, as of January 10th, 33,000 have been trained.

o   A new military aid package (worth 2.5 million Pounds) was announced on January 12th.  This package includes:

ü  Additional equipment for air defense

ü  Anti-tank weapons

ü  Long-range missiles

ü  Artillery shells

ü  An allocation of 200 million Pounds to produce various drones for reconnaissance and long-range attack.

·         On January 12th, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that their personnel have not been given access to check Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant’s reactor halls of units 1, 2 and 6.

 

War and Atrocity Crimes Investigations Highlights: 

·         The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine reported that between January 5-12, 729 new war crimes were registered. 

·         The World Health Organization verified that between December 29 to January 11th, there were 11 attacks on healthcare. 

·         On January 10th, a hotel frequently used by humanitarians in Kharkiv was hit by Russian forces.  A minimum of a dozen civilians was injured. 

 

Humanitarian Impact and Response and Recovery Highlights:

·         The UN is reporting:

o   5.9 million refugees in Europe.

o   There are 3.7 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Ukraine.

o   A total of 4.6 million people has returned to Ukraine. 

·         Russian strikes have continued to wreak havoc on Ukrainian cities over the past several days, causing death and destruction, and impacting access to water, electricity, heating, and health services for millions of civilians in the middle of winter.

·         Since the intensification of aerial attacks on December 29th across Ukraine, approximately 3,000 families had their homes damaged:

o   Dnipropetrovska, Donetska, Zaporizka and Kharkivska oblasts had the largest number of residential buildings damaged or destroyed.

o   Homes in Chernihivska and Sumska oblasts in the north, western Khmelnytska Oblast, as well as in Kyiv, Liv and Odesa cities were also impacted.

·         On January 11th, the United Nations Development Programme, in partnership with the European Union (EU) and the governments of Denmark and Sweden, has opened a Recovery and Development Office in Voznesensk (Mykolaiv Oblast):

o   The office will play a key role in a nationwide initiative to coordinate international cooperation at the local level.

o   This office will also assist in project prioritization for donors and programs, promoting sustainable development through an Integrated Recovery Mechanism.

·         WHO is supporting the Ministry of Health with the development of a modern system of rehabilitation in the country. 

·         The EU is seeking donations for the following sectors:

o   Energy supplies

o   Medicines

o   Shelter equipment

 

Russian Dis-information Campaign Highlights:

·         The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have launched a website to counter Russian dis-information. 

·         Russia has launched a bizarre dis-information campaign about Brigitte Macron to Italy's 'lost sovereignty'.

·         The Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson recently implied that NATO and the EU have the same member states and that the EU countries’ financial contributions to NATO’s common defense budget go to the United States.  A factcheck is available here

 

Cultural Heritage Protection Highlights:

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as of January 10th has verified damage to 337 cultural heritage sites.  This includes:  

·         126 Religious sites

·         148 Buildings of historical and/or artistic interest

·         30 Museums

·         19 Monuments

·         13 Libraries

·         1 Archive
