Nepal Severe Flooding Situation Report #4

Highlights:
· As of August 31st, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported the following:
o 903 confirmed fatalities and 4,247 people are reported as missing.
o The Nepali Police on August 29th have launched a website containing information on recovered unidentified and unclaimed bodies.
o 267 people have been injured.
· Search and Rescue Operations:
o A total of 3,141 people has been rescued (2,932 Nepalese & 209 Foreign Nationals).
o Government-led search and rescue efforts have mobilized 20,618 personnel across the affected areas.
o On August 30th, the Nepali Army has intensified their search and rescue operations inside the tunnel of the Upper Trishuli 3 'A' Hydropower Project located in Nuwakot:
ü A joint team (Army and Police) of 90 personnel have been deployed
ü These efforts have including blasting to remove debris from the tunnel.
ü The team have not detected any victims in the tunnel at this time.
· The NDRRMA on August 31st reported that a landslide that occurred in Chekampa Chaurikharka, Ward No. 7 of Chumanubri Rural Municipality in Gorkha District, has blocked the Budhi Gandaki River:
o This caused the stream to stop flowing for a short while, but water has now started flowing again, stabilizing the situation.
· National Government’s Actions:
o Government’s relief operations have deployed 34 trucks, 35 jeeps, and eight helicopters.
o A national command post and 15 emergency sectoral coordination teams have been deployed to support health, communications, roads, and electricity restoration.
o A total of 15 teams have been created by the national government to streamline response actions focused on the following missions:
ü Emergency Communication Restoration
ü Electricity Restoration and Backup Power
ü Search, Rescue and Evacuation
ü Emergency Health and Medical Response
ü Dead Body Management
ü International Assistance and Donor Coordination
ü Transport and Road Connectivity
ü Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment
ü Missing Persons and Family Assistance
ü Relief (Food, Water and Essential Supplies)
ü Airport Coordination
o Transportation on the Mugling-Malekhu section of the Prithvi Highway remains completely blocked due to toe-cutting at Krishna Bhir and Parewa Bhir.
o Power supply has been restored in Dhading and Nuwakot and restoration work continues in Rasuwa.
· On August 29th, Nepali Police paid tribute to Sub-Inspector Timure and Inspector Ram Hari Khadka, who lost their lives in Rasuwa Bhote Koshi.
· The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) has deployed the following supplies to the affected areas as of August 31st:
o 856 Tarpaulins and 10 Tents
o 440 Mattress
o 750 Blankets
o 196 Hygiene kits
o 760 Dignity Kits
o 1,930 Body bags
o 9,000 N95 Masks
· International Assistance:
o The World Food Programme (WFP) reported the following activities:
ü A total of 31.9 metric tons of food assistance has been delivered.
ü WFP continues to support the Government-led response by transporting relief supplies and operating the Kathmandu Humanitarian Staging Area.
ü Field teams have been deployed to monitor food distributions and gather operational information.
o The UN Population’s Fund (UNFPA) has mobilized 2,000 dignity kits for affected women and girls, with delivery to affected communities facilitated through the Government of Nepal and the NRCS.
o UNFPA has also deployed two mobile health units, alongside reproductive health supplies, to help maintain life-saving reproductive and maternal health services in affected areas.
o On August 29th, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reported that the third shipment of essential relief supplies (food, water and other supplies) was delivered.
o The EU and the World Health Organization (WHO) on August 29th have provided trauma kits and essential supplies to Emergency Medical Teams:
ü These kits contain medicines and supplies sufficient to provide basic health services for up to 10,000 people.
o WHO on August 30th released $150,000 from the South-East Asia Regional Health Emergency Fund to support urgent health and other needs of communities impacted.
o On August 30th, the US Embassy, Nepal reported the following:
ü More than 2.5 tons of food supplies, 500 blankets, 500 mosquito nets and 500 insulating foal sheets for shelter flooring was delivered.
ü The U.S. government has also allocated $3.6 million in assistance to match the national government’s requests.
