Military and Diplomatic Highlights:  

·       Over the past week, Israeli forces have continued to carry out heavy bombardment from the air, land and sea across the Gaza Strip, alongside continued ground operations.

·       Detonation and demolition of residential buildings also continued to be reported, particularly in Gaza and the Khan Younis governorates.

·       Rocket fire by Palestinian armed groups into Israel and fighting with Israeli forces have also taken place.

·       The Israeli Prime Minister on August 7th announced that the Security Cabinet approved the Prime Minister's proposal for defeating Hamas according to five principles:

1.     The disarming of Hamas.

2.     The return of all the hostages.

3.     The demilitarization of the Gaza Strip.

4.     Israeli security control in the Gaza Strip.

5.     The establishment of an alternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority.

·       The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported on August 8th that they killed the following terrorists:

o   Muraad Nasser Moussa Abu Jarrad, deputy commander of the Beit Hanoun Battalion of the Islamic Jihad terror organization.

o   Mahmoud Shukri Tiym Dardsawi, IJ deputy head of the anti-tank array in Gaza City.

o   Muhammad Wishah “Abu Khali”, a senior Syrian terrorist in PFLP in Syria was eliminated.

o   Abu Khali

 

Civil Protection and Humanitarian Assistance Highlights (Gaza Strip):

·       On August 6th, the Israeli military issued two displacement orders for parts of Gaza and Khan Younis governorates, covering 3.7 square kilometers.

·       The United Nations is continuing to urge immediate action to flood Gaza with aid and commercial cargo to address catastrophic humanitarian conditions, including starvation and deaths from malnutrition.

·       Nearly 12,000 children under five years in Gaza were identified to be suffering from acute malnutrition in July, the highest monthly figure recorded to date.

·       The four distribution points operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation are inadequate to provide humanitarian assistance to two million people.

·       Healthcare and Public Health Update:

o   The World Health Organization (WHO) on August 4th delivered 12 trucks of essential medical supplies into Gaza:

ü  13 pallets of blood were delivered to the Nasser Medical Complex, which is Gaza’s main referral hospital.

o   WHO on August 6th supported the medical evacuation of 15 child critical patients to Jordan, with 42 companions. Over 14,800 patients in Gaza are still in urgent need of specialized medical care.

o   As of August 6th, complex entry requirements and the arbitrary denial of international WHO emergency medical teams (EMTs) is severely impacting availability of health services and leading to more deaths:

ü  Since March 18, denial rates have risen by nearly 50%, with 102 critical international EMT health professionals, including surgeons and other specialized medical staff, barred from entry.

o   On August 6th, the EU Humanitarian Air Bridge carrying 80 tons of medical items landed in Tel Aviv.

o   The United Nations Population Fund Reported on August 8th that births have dropped by over 41% in just three years. They also reported:

ü  220 stillbirths.

ü  20 newborns died within 24 hours.

ü  5% of newborns needed intensive care.

ü  18% of newborns were born premature or underweight.

·       Food Security Update:

o   Since July 20th, the main food assistance partners have resumed regular cargo collection from Zikim crossing in northern Gaza and Kerem Shalom crossing in southern Gaza.

o   Between August 4-9, several humanitarian air drops were conducted:

ü  August 4th: Six countries dropped 120 food aid packages.

ü  August 5th: Six countries delivered 110 food aid packages.

ü  August 7th: Five countries delivered 80 food aid packages.

ü  August 8th: Six counties delivered 72 food aid packages.

ü  August 9th: Six counties delivered 106 food aid packages.

o   World Central Kitchen reported on August 8th that they resumed operations at their Mawasi Field Kitchen.

·       The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on August 6th that without immediate action most international Non-Government Organizations operating in Gaza and the West Bank could be de-registered by Israel in the coming weeks.

·       The United Nations Satellite Centre has released an updated satellite-based assessment of structural damage which found that 78% of all structures are either damaged or destroyed.

 

Violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Highlights:

·       Between August 3-7, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that three of their personnel were killed:

o   Omar Isleem was killed on August 3rd, when the IDF attacked the PRCS headquarters in Khan Younis. Two other staff members were injured in this attack.

o   Abdel Majeed Adnan Salamah was killed by the IDF when he went in search of food in the US-Israeli aid zone west of Rafah.

o   Ashraf Suleiman Eid Yousef was killed on August 7th, along with civilians while waiting to receive aid in the Kisufim area, east of the central governorate.

·       As of August 4th, Israel is still detaining 15 WHO personnel.
