Military and Diplomatic Highlights:
· The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continued operations in Gaza from January 24-25:
o More than 10 Hamas fighters were killed in Khan Yunis, Central Gaza, and Northern Gaza.
o Multiple military command centers, infrastructure and weapons were destroyed and seized.
Civil Protection and Humanitarian Assistance Highlights:
· Because of an attack on the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Khan Younis Training Centre on January 24th, thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have fled the camp and moved to the Egyptian border.
· On January 24th, Israeli protesters attempted to block the entry of humanitarian aid through the Kerem Shalom crossing, holding up the trucks for several hours:
o Only nine trucks were able to enter, and the rest (114) were forced to reroute to Egypt and the Rafah crossing.
· The EU has completed 37 humanitarian flights to Egypt. These flights have delivered:
o 1,620 tons of relief items
o 1,500 logistics items
· Healthcare and Public Health Update:
o The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on January 24th that there are now 14 partially functional hospitals (7 in the North and 7 in the South):
o The two minimally functioning hospitals (Al Kheir and Nasser) are not able to receive patients or supplies due to Israeli presence and operations.
o The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has been working at established a medical point in Khan Tunis. This point aims to receive those with moderate and mild injuries and provide life-saving medical services.
· On January 23rd, the Palestinian telecommunications company Paltel announced that services in Gaza are gradually being restored:
o Initial reports indicate that the phone lines have not been restored to the middle and northern areas, and internet services have not been restored to the rest of Gaza.
Violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Highlights:
· UNRWA reports that as of January 22nd, a total of 152 staff members have been killed.
· On January 24th, the UNRWA Khan Younis Training Center was hit by direct fire:
o The building struck was housing 800 IDPs, 13 were killed and 56 injured.
o At least 43,000 IDPs were registered in and within close vicinity of the training center.
o This was the third direct hit on this compound.
o UNRWA shares the location of all its facilities including shelters directly with Israeli authorities.
o WHO assisted in the evacuation of 45 patients to Al-Najjar Hospital. One patient died enroute to the hospital.
· The PRCS reported the following on January 24th:
o IDF forces are continuing to siege their ambulance headquarters and Al Amal Hospital in Khan Younis and restricting all movement in the area.
o The entrance of the PRCS headquarters was reportedly struck, killing at least three people, and injuring two.
· The IDF has released PRCS volunteer Saleh Al-Jarjir, who was detained with seven other staff members for 35 days. The IDF is still detaining four staff members.
