Democratic Republic of the Congo & Uganda Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Outbreak Situation Report #7

Global Highlights:  

·       The World Health Organization (WHO) is reporting that as of June 8th there are a total of 663 (569 confirmed & 94 suspected) cases:

o   There are 104 (103 confirmed & 1 suspected) deaths.

o   As of June 6th, WHO reported 5,040 contacts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Currently, 62% of these contacts are being followed up.

o   A total of 24 people has recovered.

·       On June 7th, WHO and the Africa Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (Africa CDC) has launched a Continental Preparedness and Response Plan that is estimated to need $518 million between June-November 2026.

·       On June 9th, Africa CDC issued interim guidance for all African Union member states to strengthen surveillance and cross-border preparedness.

·       The EU Commission has committed 11.5 million Euros to strengthen Africa CDC’s efforts against Ebola and other urgent public health threats.

·       On June 6th, WHO reassessed the risk assessment:

o   DRC: Very High

o   Uganda: High

o   African nations sharing a border: High

o   Rest of Africa: Low

o   Global: Low

 

Democratic Republic of the Congo Highlights:

·       The DRC Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Security reported the following activities:

o   As of June 4th, 340 tons of medicines and supplies have been deployed for the benefit of the Ituri and North Kivu provinces.

ü  Three health zones have already received medicines and supplies.

o   A laboratory has been installed in Mungwalu, Ituri province on June 5th. This lab was set-up to bring diagnostic capabilities closer to the areas affected.

·       On June 5th, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) delivered 13 Safe and Dignified Burial kits and body bags to Bunia, that can support 300 safe and dignified burials.

·       On June 5th, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC handed over three armored vehicles and two ambulances to WHO.

·       The IFRC reported on June 6th, that DRC Red Cross volunteers carrying out a safe and dignified burial operation in Bunia on June 1st were attacked.

 

Uganda Highlights:

·       The Uganda Red Cross Society reported on June 5th that they are continuing to train additional Safe and Dignified Burial teams to support response activities.
