Global Highlights
· As of September 6th, the World Health Organization (WHO) there are 6,923 cases (6,707 confirmed, 215 probable & 1 suspected):
o A total of 3,229 deaths (3,228 confirmed & 1 probable).
o 1,582 people have recovered.
· Contact Management Update:
o Between August 31 to September 6 there were a total of 13,730 reported alerts:
ü 89.4% were verified and 100% were investigated.
ü 53% were isolated and transferred to treatment centers.
o Contact tracing remained below the 95% target.
· Case management capacity throughout the affected areas continues to expand with a total of 49 treatment centers that have 1,366 beds:
o These centers have a 62% occupancy as of September 6th.
o Bed capacity is expected to increase to 1,898 beds by mid-September with a target of 3,000 beds by the end of October.
· A total of 252,682 travelers were recorded as of September 6th with 98.1% screened.
· WHO on September 8th has stated that the priority now is to scale up key response measures further and faster. This includes disease surveillance, contact tracing and treatment.
· WHO reported on September 3rd in the Ituri province has begun an effort to inform local chiefs, youth representatives, religious leaders and other community leaders on the care patients receive in the Ebola Treatment Centers (ETC):
o This initiative’s goal is to address misconceptions and strengthen trust in ETCs.
o These individuals have an opportunity to speak directly to those receiving care and learn about their experiences.
o This initiative is planned to be expanded to other affected areas.
· Delivery of supplies continued to progress, with cumulative delivered cargo reaching 346.7 metric tons.
· Critical commodities continued to reach the Ituri and Kivu hubs, cumulative deliveries include:
o 78,274 hooded coveralls
o 5.53 million examination gloves
o 158,800 Level 3 gowns
o 261 hospital beds
o 10,076 infrared thermometers
o 20,016 RadiOne PCR tests
o 7,200 manual PCR tests
· On September 4th, the Multi-sectoral Response Plan was revised:
o The plan serves as the operational roadmap for the next six months and prioritizes strengthened surveillance and contact tracing, clinical care, community engagement and risk communication, logistics, and preparedness in at-risk provinces.
o Implementation is estimated to require $1.3 billion.
· The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) reported on September 7th that the United Kingdom’s government has increased its support for the Ebola response, bringing its total commitment to £78.7 million.
· The DRC Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare reported on September 8th that they are expanding the country’s healthcare system:
o 300 health centers are currently under construction.
o The next step is to equip these centers with the necessary materials and equipment.
