Global Highlights
· The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that as of August 31st there are 6.662 cases (6,207 confirmed, 454 suspected & 1 probable):
o A total of 3,010 people has died (3,009 confirmed & 1 probable).
o 1,428 people have recovered.
· The DRC Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare (DRC MOH) on August 31st reported the following:
o There has been no new geographic extension of the outbreak for 24-hours.
o Ituri remains the epicenter and South Kivu has now been recorded 92 days without a new confirmed case.
o DRC MOH has personnel deployed in 6 provinces and 60 health zones.
o Contact tracing has progressed to 88%.
· The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on September 2nd reported that this outbreak remains the organization’s highest priority.
· The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) reported that as of August 31st:
o 6.1 million people have been displaced.
o 26.5 million people are facing food insecurity. This includes 4.2 million children that are affected by malnutrition.
· OCHA reports that the UN and their humanitarian partners will be deploying more than 2,5000 volunteers and civil protection personnel over the next several months.
· Humanitarian partners are adding 35 mobile teams and 286 community-based teams across Ituri, North Kivu, and Tshopo provinces, while extending operations to Haut-Uélé and Bas-Uélé:
o The teams will support surveillance, community engagement, psychosocial assistance, and safe and dignified burials to help prevent further transmission.
· The World Food Programme (WFP) on September 1st delivered five ambulances that are now supporting the response.
· WFP has also supported more than 19 partners and transported 400 metric tons of cargo.
· The Logistics and Telecommunications Cluster reported the following activities:
o Upgrades have been made to the Security Communications Systems in Bunia and Mongbwalu. This includes the replacement and expansion of VHF repeater infrastructure.
o 26 Starlink kits arrived in Bunia on August 28th and are being prioritized for deployment to Ebola-affected locations.
· The UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has continued their patrols to Fataki and Bule (Djugu, Ituri) often alongside the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC).
· On September 1st, MONUSCO reinforced its presence in Bamande, Irumu territory following clashes between the FARDC and suspected elements of the Allied Democratic Forces:
o These clashes have forced many residents to flee the area.
o MONUSCO deployed two rapid reaction teams to the scene, ahead of the deployment of a mobile operational base to strengthen the protection of civilians.
· The UN Senior Ebola Coordinator reported on September 2nd that humanitarian leaders have extended the system-wide scale-up in response to the outbreak for another six months.
