Global Highlights
· The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on August 27th there are 6,285 cases (5,884 confirmed, 400 suspected and 1 probable):
o 2,827 people have died.
o 1,337 people have recovered.
o Delays in recognizing cases increase the likelihood of onward transmission within households, communities and healthcare facilities.
o The outbreak has now spread from 54 to 60 health zone and six of the 26 provinces are affected.
o As of August 24th, it has been 100 days since the official declaration of the outbreak.
· On August 27th, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Uganda has completed the 42-day countdown with no new confirmed cases.
· The UN Senior Ebola Coordinator on August 29th reported that an Ebola Free Congo Initiative has been launched by the DRC government with support and funding from the UN agencies. This initiative’s goal is to protect and care for thousands of people who travel down the Congo River and the City of Kinshasa.
· Vaccination Update:
o CEPI on August 27th announced a new $16.5 million partnership with Minapharm Group to develop their Bundibugyo vaccine candidate.
o The Gavi Vaccine Alliance on August 28th announced that the Ervebo vaccine has begun to be distributed to frontline health workers.
· The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reported that as of August 24th, there has been several incidents of violence against volunteers and equipment:
o 12 volunteers have been injured in 11 security incidents.
o Several ambulances have been damaged, including one that was set on fire.
o Several pieces of emergency response equipment have been damaged.
· Humanitarian Assistance Update:
o The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) on August 25th announced through OCHA Funds, humanitarian partners are providing health, water, hygiene, sanitation, and protection assistance to more than 40,000 people.
o The World Food Programme (WFP) as of August 25th has accomplished the following activities:
ü Over 262,000 hot meals have been served at 20 treatment centers.
ü More than 63,000 contacts have been reached with food rations.
ü 4,035 responders have been transported.
ü 63.7 metric tons of supplies have been delivered.
o WFP on August 26th handed over a new Lita logistics base which includes administrative facilities and two laboratory units, to the DRC.
· The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) on August 25th established a temporary operating base to help secure Ebola response operations and contribute to the protection of local communities.
· To bring this outbreak under control, the UN Senior Ebola Coordinator on August 27th stated that the government led $1.3 billion response plan and the remaining $1.1 billion humanitarian plan needs to be funded.
